INHA University Professor: Statistics is not merely a collection of numbers - behind every piece of data lies a certain event or story

Baku, July 21, AZERTAC
Sangcheol Lee, professor at the Department of Statistics of INHA University of the Republic of Korea (South Korea), shared his impressions of the latest summer school organized at Baku Engineering University (BEU).
At the summer school, organized within the framework of the dual-degree program implemented between BEU and INHA University, the Korean professor, who delivered a lecture titled "Introduction to Statistics" to students studying in the "Data Analytics" (Data Science) specialty, stated that the classes mainly teach methods of how to summarize data and describe it through graphs and various statistical indicators.
"Afterward, based on this summarized data, statistical conclusions are drawn about the general population, which we cannot directly observe, and scientifically grounded decisions are made. These topics form the fundamental basis of the science of statistics. The main idea I especially want to convey to students is that statistics is not merely a collection of numbers. Data are not just fixed figures; behind every piece of data lies a certain event, process, or story. The purpose of statistical analysis is precisely to reveal the meaning and patterns hidden behind this data," Sangcheol Lee emphasized.
The Korean professor also shared his impressions of Azerbaijan, saying he felt great satisfaction being in Baku: "This is my first time coming to Baku. I came here together with my family — my wife and my 20-month-old son. The people I have met in the city are extremely kind, warm, and hospitable. They have always been ready to help me, even with the smallest matters. For this reason, I feel great satisfaction being in Baku, and I am truly enjoying the time I have spent here."
It should be noted that the latest summer school organized at BEU with the participation of INHA University's faculty, for students of the dual-degree program, aims to deepen their theoretical knowledge, develop their practical skills, and provide them with international academic experience. A faculty of 13 members from INHA University has been engaged in the teaching process.
