The King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center (KFSHRC) has successfully performed a robotic surgery to implant chips in the brain of a patient who suffers from drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE), according to Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
The chips identify focal seizure areas in the brain to be removed through a modern medical procedure performed for the first time in the Middle East.
The robot-assisted surgery relies on minimal surgical intervention, making multiple holes of no more than two millimetres in the skull to implant chips in the brain that measure the electrical activity of the brain and detects focal seizure areas.
The robotic surgery is a better alternative to the Leksell frame-based method, a traditional method used to calculate the measurements needed to identify precise areas in the brain, which takes more time and effort.
Robotic surgery is a modern medical technique used at leading international medical institutions. It enables doctors to perform complex surgeries with higher accuracy, flexibility and control. It is also less invasive than traditional surgical techniques, which leads to a shorter recovery period and fewer complications.
