Beijing, January 19 AzerTAc

The Azerbaijani Embassy in China has hosted a commemorative event to mark the 25th anniversary of the 20 January tragedy.
The ceremony started with a minute silence for victims of the January tragedy.
A book-album entitled “January 20: A bloody and glorious page of our history”, a joint project of the Public and Political Affairs Department of the Azerbaijani Presidential Administration and AzerTAc, has been presented as part of the event.
Addressing the ceremony, Ambassador Latif Gandilov briefed the event participants on the bloody tragedy.
He said the 20 January 1990 is a day, which went down in the history as the struggle for the freedom and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, and as a heroism page.
The diplomat pointed out that the day after the tragedy happened, national leader Heydar Aliyev came to permanent representation of Azerbaijan in Moscow, and held a press conference overtly condemning the Soviet leadership`s actions against the Azerbaijani people. He also noted that thanks to national leader Heydar Aliyev the tragedy was given a political and legal assessment.
AzerTAc`s Special Correspondent in China Shahin Jafarov provided information about “January 20: A bloody and glorious page of our history” book-album. He said the book includes hundreds of photos depicting the tragedy. “This publication is of profound importance in terms of delivering the truth about the tragedy to the current and future generations and, at the same time, increasing the world community`s awareness about it.” “The project was aimed at gathering photos and documents related to the January 20 events into a single collection so that readers have a clear and objective understanding of the tragedy,” he said. Jafarov noted that the publication came out in Azerbaijani, English, Russian and Arab languages. “We plan to send the copies of the book to appropriate bodies, libraries, research and educational institutions in China,” he added.
The event participants watched a documentary on the Black January.
