A 100-year low in available water at the sea of Galilee
Baku, October 13, AZERTAC
Israel is facing an exceptional water shortage, with the amount of available water in the Sea of Galilee reaching its lowest level in 100 years, according to the Israel Water Authority. The crisis reflects prolonged drought and insufficient rainfall, putting additional pressure on the country’s water resources, according to TPS-IL.
According to the Authority’s hydrological report, the lake’s basin received about 90% of its long-term average rainfall during the 2025–2026 season. Available water totaled approximately 142 million cubic meters through April, bringing the combined total for the past two seasons to just 208 million cubic meters, the lowest in a century of measurements.
Water Authority director Yehezkel Lifshitz warned that improved rainfall does not necessarily mean natural water sources have recovered.
The report comes amid concerns over Israel’s water supply following a September disruption that temporarily shut down nearly all desalination plants after unusually turbid seawater reached Israel’s Mediterranean coast from Egypt.
