“The recent visit of the diplomatic corps representatives to Garabagh and East Zangezur has once again revealed revanchist approaches in Armenian society. Dissatisfaction and protests in several circles of Armenian society regarding the visit of the diplomatic corps accredited in Azerbaijan to Garabagh and East Zangezur are illogical and far from reality,” Sevinj Huseynova, Chairperson of the YAP Inspection Commission, Member of the Milli Majlis, told AZERTAC.
“Undoubtedly, the statements voiced against the visit of foreign diplomats to the internationally recognized territories of Azerbaijan show that the attitude towards Azerbaijan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity still remain contradictory in a certain part of Armenian society,” she mentioned.
Noting that this issue is not limited to the visit of diplomatic representatives, the Azerbaijani MP said: “In some opinions voiced in various media and socio-political resources of Armenia, approaches against the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, as well as previous claims regarding Garabagh, are observed to be brought to the agenda in various forms.
The MP underlined that it is illogical for the matter of historical and cultural heritage to become a subject of political debates again, as the issue of the belonging of historical and religious monuments in Garabagh also occupies a special place in the opinions expressed in Armenian society regarding the visit.
Huseynova emphasized that despite the establishment of a peace agenda in Azerbaijan-Armenia relations, the existence of a revanchist attitude in Armenian society does not go unnoticed. “Harsh reactions to the visit of diplomatic representatives to Garabagh are also viewed in certain circles as proof that old political perceptions still persist,” she added.
The Azerbaijani MP believes that the visit of diplomatic representatives to Garabagh and East Zangezur is evaluated as a legitimate diplomatic activity carried out in the sovereign territories of Azerbaijan. “The reactions observed in certain circles of Armenian society to this visit once again demonstrate that the peace process needs to be reinforced not only at the political level, but at the social level as well. Mutual respect for territorial integrity, sovereignty, cultural heritage, renouncing revanchist appeals are essential for ensuring lasting regional peace,” Sevinj Huseynova concluded.
