Baku, July 30, AZERTAC Ancient mammoth remains have been discovered due to the low water level of the Danube River near the village of Ryahovo (on the Danube), Ruse Regional History Museum Director Prof. Nikolay Nenov told BTA on Wednesday.According to Nenov, the discovery was reported by local residents, and specialists from the Ecomuseum in Ruse who were sent to the site identified a lower jaw, two tusks and what is probably a rib from a mammoth.“Tomorrow [Thursday] we will arrange for the remains to be recovered and transported to the museum. After that, we will have more information about the species of mammoth and exactly what the remains found represent,” Prof. Nenov said.He explained that the preliminary hypothesis is that the remains were not carried there by the river's current. According to him, numerous similar finds have previously been discovered in the area and recovered from river sediments using dredging equipment. The current case is different, however, as the remains were concentrated in one place. This suggests that the animal may have died there.Prof. Nenov said that scientists had also previously indicated that the area could contain similar archaeological finds. It is believed that thousands of years ago the site was a swamp where the animal died.After being transported to the museum, the remains will be conserved and examined to determine which mammoth species they belong to. Specialists currently believe they probably come from a single individual, but a final conclusion will be reached after the examinations are completed.“I would not call it a sensation, but every discovery of such ancient remains is very important for science,” the head of the Regional History Museum in Ruse said.
