Baku, July 29, AZERTAC The Greenpeace icebreaker Arctic Sunrise will dock in Varna and be open to visitors on August 7 and 8, Greenpeace Bulgaria said on Wednesday. The ship will visit Bulgaria as part of the organisation's campaign to protect oceans, the climate and vulnerable marine ecosystems, according to the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA).Held under the slogan "A Living Black Sea Without Oil and Gas," the visit will feature media events, discussions on the sea's future, and opportunities to meet the captain and members of the international crew while learning about Greenpeace's ocean campaigns.The Black Sea is among the world's most vulnerable due to industrial pressure, fossil fuel extraction, oil transport and climate change, Greenpeace stressed. "The Black Sea is far too valuable and fragile to become an oil corridor or a site for new oil and gas projects," Greenpeace Bulgaria Director Meglena Antonova stated.The Varna visit will also launch Greenpeace Bulgaria's Cities Without Gas initiative, which encourages municipalities to invest in energy efficiency and local renewable energy instead of new gas infrastructure. The campaign argues that energy security depends on reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels rather than expanding gas networks.Built for operations in icy waters, Arctic Sunrise has been part of the Greenpeace fleet since 1995, taking part in environmental campaigns and scientific expeditions around the world.
