Baku, June 26, AZERTAC
Türkiye pulled off a dramatic 3-2 victory over the United States on Thursday in their final Group D match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at Los Angeles Stadium in the United States.
The United States made a lightning-fast start, with Auston Trusty capitalizing on a defensive lapse in the third minute to fire home at the near post past goalkeeper Uğurcan Çakır.
Türkiye responded quickly. Barış Alper Yılmaz weaved through the U.S. defense before squaring the ball for Real Madrid star Arda Güler, who rifled it into the net in the 10th minute to score both his and Türkiye’s first goal of the tournament. It was Türkiye’s 63rd shot of the competition and their first World Cup goal in 24 years, since İlhan Mansız scored in 2002.
With the match finely balanced, both teams pushed for the advantage. Türkiye took the lead in the 31st minute after a flowing passing move ended with Orkun Kökçü calmly slotting the ball into the net.
The United States responded early in the second half. After Türkiye failed to fully clear a cross into the penalty area, Sebastian Berhalter pounced on the loose ball and fired it into the net in the 49th minute to score his first international goal.
However, Türkiye snatched victory deep into stoppage time when Kaan Ayhan scored from close range in the 90+8th minute, sealing their first and only win of the tournament.
Despite the defeat, the United States finished top of Group D to advance to the Round of 32, while Türkiye ended the group stage at the bottom of the standings and were eliminated.
The United States are set to face Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32.
