The Azerbaijani Women’s Support Centre (AWSC) as a role model for Canadian society
Baku, March 21, AZERTAC
Guivami Rahimli, PhD, Professor at Baku State University, who also served as president of the Azerbaijan-Norway Friendship Society, shared with AZERTAC the article related to the Azerbaijani Women’s Support Centre (AWSC) in Canada.
Having great experience in diaspora work, Guivami supported Azerbaijani diaspora organizations in conveying the true voice of Azerbaijan to the world during the challenging period when Azerbaijanis restored its internationally recognized territorial integrity, liberating Karabakh region from Armenian occupation. A peace deal has been agreed upon between Armenia and Azerbaijan to establish lasting peace in the region. Along with other diaspora organizations, AWSC made an invaluable contribution to conveying an accurate information about Azerbaijan to the international audience regarding the Karabakh conflict.
The Azerbaijani Women’s Support Centre (AWSC) is a charity organization dedicated to helping women and families in need through various programs and initiatives and the only charity organization for the Azerbaijani women in Canada.
The AWSC has just celebrated the 20th anniversary, a remarkable milestone reflecting the organization’s dedication and unwavering commitment to supporting women and families both locally and globally. Over the two decades AWSC has made a profound impact by advocating for women’s right, addressing critical issues such as violence against women, poverty, Islamophobia, and anti-Semitism, and fostering a more inclusive and equitable society.
The Azerbaijani women in Canada inherit their commitment to diversity and interfaith relationships, supporting people from different cultures based on multicultural values of their homeland - Azerbaijan, one of the few places in the world where for centuries people of different religious backgrounds have peacefully coexisted. Azerbaijan’s religious pluralism has led to a great popular tolerance towards peoples of other faiths, as well as a culture of hospitality, giving a notable example to our divisive world in the current global political climate. The rankings sites include Azerbaijan with its unique ethnic and religious groups into the list of most tolerant nations in the world, successfully promoting the values of multiculturalism.
It is no coincidence that Vatican’s Pope Francis commends the religious tolerance in Azerbaijan, the country that plays “great significance for peaceful coexistence and for peace in the world.”
AWSC - a champion of diversity for demonstrating cross-cultural understanding and supporting people from diverse cultures, received congratulations from individuals who received the organization’s support and partners on this remarkable event.
Canada’s government authorities, the Mayor of Toronto, parliament members, as well as the Canadian Prime Minister sent congratulation letters to the Azerbaijani Women’s Support Centre on the occasion of the 20th anniversary, expressing their appreciation for the Azerbaijani women’s outstanding work and great achievements.
