Iraq Assumes Chairmanship of G 77 and China: Iraqi FM Calls for Sustainable Development and Addressing Challenges

On Monday, January 13, 2025, Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein, gave Iraq’s speech at the United Nations on the occasion of Iraq assuming the presidency of the Group of 77 and China for the year 2025, according to the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Minister Hussein stated, “It is a great honor for Iraq and for me personally to have this great responsibility by Iraq assuming the presidency of the group. We realize the importance of this role and the great responsibility placed on our shoulders, and we will work through our presidency to achieve our common goals and priorities.” In light of the increasing global challenges, stressing Iraq’s commitment to strengthening solidarity among member states and achieving common goals, including the sustainable development goals, confronting climate change, enhancing cooperation between countries of the South, and protecting the interests of developing countries.
The Minister indicated that Iraq will work during its presidency of the group to achieve sustainable development by focusing on combating poverty, improving education and health, and enhancing international cooperation, while supporting global initiatives to address climate change and providing the necessary financing for developing countries. He also stressed the importance of strengthening relations between member states and exchanging expertise and resources to ensure comprehensive and sustainable development. Minister Hussein stressed the need to address economic challenges by finding effective solutions to the debt problem, enhancing food security, and improving governance of international financial institutions.
Iraq affirmed its commitment to enhancing international dialogue to address common global issues and enhance regional and international stability, in addition to continuing to combat terrorism and support affected countries to achieve security and stability, as well he stressed the importance of bridging the digital gap between countries and enhancing the digital economy, with a focus on empowering women and youth by improving education and vocational training opportunities, which contributes to enhancing human development.
The Minister touched on “Iraq Vision 2030”, which aims to achieve comprehensive and sustainable development and transform the Iraqi economy into a diversified and prosperous economy, additionally he emphasized the National Strategy for Environmental Protection, which focuses on addressing the challenges of climate change and water scarcity.
The Minister concluded his speech by emphasizing Iraq’s commitment to cooperating with member states to achieve people’s aspirations for peace, development, and prosperity.
