FREYWILLE launches Magic Carpet collection inspired by Karabakh's Varni Carpet
Baku, December 6, AZERTAC
The renowned Austrian jewellery brand FREYWILLE presented its new *Magic Carpet* collection at the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum. This exclusive collection, developed in collaboration with the Museum under a Memorandum of Understanding, aims to promote Azerbaijani heritage globally.
Amina Melikova, Director of the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum, spoke about the collection, highlighting its deep respect for Azerbaijani cultural and national heritage, as well as the country’s rich jewellery traditions.
Jahangir Salimkhanov, advisor to the Minister of Culture, praised the collection as a significant success in promoting Azerbaijani culture, describing it as a beautiful fusion of craftsmanship, history, and culture. Nigar Namazova, head of the FREYWILLE representative office in Azerbaijan, expressed pride in the collaboration between the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum and FREYWILLE.
In a video message, FREYWILLE owner Dr. Friedrich Wille referred to the works preserved at the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum as an “endless source of inspiration” for the brand’s jewellery pieces.
The event also included a special ceremony to cut the loom fragments of the Varni carpet, newly woven at the Museum’s Traditional Technologies Department.
The artistic portion of the event featured Azerbaijani and Austrian national music, with performances by renowned tar player and Honoured Artist Shahriyar Imanov and his band. The Mirvari dance troupe performed a piece from the ballet Seven Beauties by Gara Garayev.
The Magic Carpet collection combines contemporary art, jewellery technology, and Azerbaijan's rich history, drawing inspiration from the unique patterns of the Karabakh Varni carpet. The collection’s signature feature is the stylized dragon motifs, which symbolize protection, abundance, and prosperity. According to tradition, dragons were believed to protect homes and ward off evil forces.
This marks the first time FREYWILLE has incorporated carpet ornaments into its jewellery designs in collaboration with the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum.
