Pre-COP29 features discussion on "TROIKA Roadmap to Mission 1.5°C”

A side event titled "TROIKA Roadmap to Mission 1.5: Enhancing International Cooperation” was co-hosted by the COP28, COP29, and COP30 presidencies as part of the Pre-COP29 event in Baku.
Addressing the event, Mukhtar Babayev, COP29 President-Designate and Azerbaijan’s Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, emphasized that COP29 will include a Human Development Day, focusing on human development, irrigation, and youth. “Adaptation is an essential pillar for enhancing and accelerating our activities globally. COP29 gives us the opportunity to expand our activities. As the COP29 Presidency, we are hosting Trio meetings to create synergy and implement tangible results. The path ahead is not easy, but decisive steps will enable us to realize our ambitions and ultimately build a sustainable future,” Mukhtar Babayev added.
Yalchin Rafiyev, COP29 Lead Negotiator and Azerbaijan’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, stressed that COP29 will be instrumental in finding practical solutions to climate change challenges. He noted that the conference would focus on methods to tackle climate change, saying, “In addition to building new partnerships, we will also develop existing ones. Our primary priority is building a sustainable future while remaining committed to the 1.5°C target.

Sultan Al Jaber, COP28 President, UAE Special Envoy for Climate Change and Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, underscored the role of COP29 as a bridge in fostering environmental harmony. “Within the framework of this cooperation, we must share advanced practices and apply technologies. Investments must be directed towards decarbonisation. We are creating real climate resilience and taking steps towards carbon dioxide reduction," Sultan Al Jaber added.

Other speakers included Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of UNFCCC, André Aranha Corrêa do Lago, Secretary for Climate, Energy and Environment at the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Wopke Hoekstra, European Union Commissioner for Climate Action, Grace Fu Hai Yien, Singaporean Minister for Sustainability and the Environment. They emphasized the significance of global collaboration to address climate challenges and the severe consequences of inaction.
Amina Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, urged all partners to support global efforts in addressing climate issues, highlighting the critical nature of such events.


Nigar Arpadarai, UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for COP29 Azerbaijan, stressed the importance of supporting parties in adhering to the Paris Agreement and emphasized the significance of public and private sector partnerships in tackling climate change.
