Draft law on Corsica`s autonomy adopted. MP Josepha Giacometti Piredda protests describing it as “shackles”

Baku, March 28, AZERTAC
The Corsican parliament has adopted a draft law pertaining the island's autonomy. The document consisting of 6 articles was divided into three parts and subjected to a vote. As per the first article of the draft text, a statute of autonomy for Corsica within the French Republic was adopted, taking into consideration its historical, linguistic and cultural characteristics of the community. 62 out of 63 MPs voted in favour of the bill.
Other articles are concerned with normative rights, insurance and other matters. These items were also adopted by majority vote. But Corsican pro-independence Nazione Party opposed the bill. Consequently, Josepha Giacometti Piredda, the party's sole MP in the Corsican parliament, voted against all provisions. MP Giacometti Piredda criticized the draft law, arguing that it was crafted in Paris under the leadership of French Interior Minister Gerard Darmanin and does not represent a step forward but rather shackles. She expressed concerns that the document focuses on issues deemed insignificant from a constitutional perspective.
The document must be approved by both houses of the French parliament to enter into force.
