Russian killed in shark attack off Red Sea coast

Baku, June 9, AZERTAC

A Russian citizen was killed in a shark attack in the Red Sea off the coast of Hurghada in Egypt on Thursday, said Russian Consul-General Viktor Voropayev, according to TASS.
"A Russian national died as a result of a shark attack," the consul-general said, adding that "this has been confirmed by Egypt’s competent authorities."
According to Voropayev, "at about 3 p.m. local time, there was a shark attack off the city’s Dream Beach (located in the center of Hurghada - TASS) coast, which caused the death of a Russian citizen, V. Yu. Popov born in 1999."
The Russian diplomat pointed out that the victim was not a tourist, but a permanent resident of Egypt. He added that Dream Beach is a municipal property and is not owned by any of the hotels that usually accommodate tourists, including those from Russia.
Voropayev added that following the incident, the consulate general was in constant contact with the police and the national security service for the Red Sea province. Russia’s consulate general in Hurghada offered its deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
The diplomatic mission called on Russian citizens to "be vigilant when in the water, strictly abide by swimming and diving bans imposed by the Egyptian authorities, and strictly obey warnings from hotel personnel and coast guards to get back to land."
