Aston Martin F1 Team Principal: It is not so difficult to overtake in Baku

Baku, April 24, AZERTAC

Mike Krak, Aston Martin F1 Team Principal, admitted he was a little nervous about the upcoming race weekend in Baku, including Saturday’s sprint, according to Athletistic.
The short race on Saturday will be held for the first time in the capital of Azerbaijan, but in previous years there have been more than one accident on this circuit.
Neither Silverstone team driver Lance Stroll nor Max Verstappen suffered this fate, and the tire of the future world champion’s RB16B exploded on lap 45 as he confidently led the race.
“I’m nervous for the Baku sprint because there simply won’t be time to repair the car if it gets seriously damaged,” Speedcafe quoted Krak as saying. “Immediately after the sprint, we will have to cover the cars with covers, after which we will only have three or four hours in the morning to make repairs if the equipment is damaged, so all this involves great risks.
However, everything is on an equal footing and it is not so difficult to overtake in Baku. But if it is risky to fly on those parts of the route where there are many turns, then the risk of accidents is higher there. But I think we will have a good show in the days of the coming weekend.”
In addition, for the first time, two qualifications have been included in the schedule of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix: in the first of these, held on Friday, the riders will, as usual, compete for places on the grid for Sunday’s race. And on Saturday, instead of training, there is a shortened qualification, which determines the starting order in the sprint.
The team leaders agreed to these changes to the weekend format in the days of the Australian Grand Prix, but only tomorrow will there be a meeting of the Formula 1 committee, which will have to approve them, after which they will have to get the approval of the FIA . World Motorsport Council, but this is already a formality.
“In general, Formula 1 has to evolve, but it is also necessary to keep its DNA,” said Krak. “We have had some constructive conversations to find ways to achieve this. It is also necessary to take into account the interests of all championship shareholders, which we do. But at the same time, we are working in a very tight time frame and we have to consider many different factors and try to find a reasonable compromise.
In some situations you have to push the interests of individual teams into the background and see the big picture. In that respect, it seems to me that the talks are very constructive.”
