Unique Egyptian amulet found during archeological excavations in northern Turkiye

Baku, November 10, AZERTAC

An amulet (good luck charm), which is thought to belong to the ancient Egyptians, was found during the excavations in the ancient city of Amastris in the Amasra district of Turkiye’s northern Bartin province, according to Anadolu Agency.
In the area, where excavations for school construction started in 2014, some remains that are considered to belong to the Roman period were found in 2017.
Then, the construction works had stopped and the archeological excavations started in the area.
The amulet in the form of a Pyramidal stamp seal, featuring various markings, such as a sword in the right hand and two wings and letter characters, was found during the excavations.
"At the bottom of the amulet, there is a figure depicting the God Bes, whom we know from the ancient Egyptian religion, depicted with incised lines. On the upper part of the work, we see that there are letter characters and talismanic words from the ancient Egyptian religion called demotic,” said Bartin University, Archeology Department Head, Prof. Fatma Bagdatli Cam.
“As a kind of talismanic object, we can define it as an object that a person wears to be protected from evil and diseases or anything that he wants to be protected,” she added stressing that it is the only example in its kind found in the Roman layer in Anatolia.
