Baku, September 16, AZERTAC

The Great Mardakan Fortress is a quadrangular defensive castle, built by Shirvanshah Akhsitan, son of Shirvanshah Manuchohr, in the middle of the 14th century, as one of the watchtowers placed over the Absheron Peninsula.
The tower was built in four-cornered shape.
The Fortress was erected in honor of the bright victory of Akhsitan on enemies and used as a place for accommodation of a military post and as an observation post.
The Tower’s height is 22 meters, its thickness from below is 2.10 meters and 1.60 meters at the top. Its inner yard is 28x25. The tower was divided into 5 levels from inside.
The stones of the Mardakan Fortress were made of eggs, lime and seashells mixture, camel and sheep wool, which prevented stone from erosion, giving it a special stability to withstand earthquakes.
