Torrential rain may hit northern Tohoku region in Japan again

Baku, August 11, AZERTAC

Torrential rain may hit the northern Japanese prefectures of Aomori and Akita again on Thursday and Friday, after record rain caused flooding in the region, according to NHK World-Japan.
Weather officials say warm, damp air keeps flowing towards a rain front hovering near northern Japan.
Intermittent heavy rain is continuing in Aomori and Akita on Thursday. Since Monday, 367 millimeters of rain has fallen in Aomori's Fukaura Town and 265 millimeters in Ajigasawa Town, also in Aomori.
Rainfall in the Tohoku region and Hokkaido Prefecture is expected to get heavier, as a low pressure system passes through northern Japan. Limited areas in northern Tohoku may have more than 80 millimeters of rain per hour.
By Friday noon, up to 200 millimeters of rain is expected in northern Tohoku and 120 millimeters in southern Tohoku and Hokkaido.
In the 24-hour period after that, up to 150 millimeters is forecast for northern Tohoku, up to 100 millimeters in southern Tohoku and 50 millimeters in Hokkaido.
The rain front is expected to hover near northern Japan for the next seven days or so.
The Meteorological Agency is urging people to stay on alert for mudslides, flooding in low-lying areas and swollen rivers. It is also advising caution against lightning, gusts and hailstorms.
Meanwhile, a developing tropical depression is moving north over waters south of Japan. It may approach eastern Japan between Friday evening and Saturday.
