Baku, July 19, AZERTAC The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has warned of lightning storms in western Japan from July 18 to around July 20, and is calling for people to be on their guard against landslides, high river levels and flooding, according to The Mainichi. According to the JMA, the combination of warm, moist air running into a weather front now over western Japan, and a low-pressure system are expected to create unstable conditions. The agency is forecasting up to 100 millimeters of rain in the northern Kyushu region, and 60 mm in the Chugoku region in the 24-hour period ending at 6 p.m. on July 18. Heavier rain is expected to hit the regions in the 24 hours up to 6 p.m. on July 19, with between 200 and 300 mm of rain in areas of the northern and southern Kyushu districts, and between 100 and 150 mm in Chugoku. Meanwhile, northern and eastern Japan continued to see precipitation on July 17, following heavy rain up to the previous day. The agency reported that up to 80 mm was expected in the 24-hour period until 6 p.m. on July 18 on Hokkaido's Pacific coast, as well as northeast Japan and the northern Kanto region near Tokyo. The JMA urges people to be on the alert for landslides as there are areas where the ground has become loose due to rainfall over the past few days.
