Baku, July 5, AZERTAC A prominent monumentalist sculptor and People’s Artist of Azerbaijan Jalal Garyaghdi was born in Shusha, the cultural capital of Azerbaijan, on July 15, 1915.He is the nephew of Jabbar Garyaghdioglu, who was one of the outstanding Azerbaijani musicians and a representative of the famous Garyaghdi dynasty of Shusha.In 1927, Jalal Garyaghdi entered the Azerbaijan State College of Arts in Baku, later continuing his education in the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts (1932-1935).In the 1930s, he worked as an artist in newspapers and as a teacher at the Art School. In 1960, he was awarded with the honorary title of “People’s Artist of the Azerbaijan SSR” for his contribution to the development of national fine arts.His works include various genres of sculpture. Monumental decorative sculpture plays a key role in his creative activity. The compactness of images and national color are typical for his works. One of the first great works of the master is the statue of a famous Azerbaijani satirical poet, public figure and teacher Mirza Alakbar Sabir (architects A. Ismayilov and G. Alizade, 1958) near the fortress walls of Icherisheher. J. Garyaghdi’s works on monumental-decorative sculpture attracts attention with its artistic expression and dynamism.The most significant works of the sculptor are the monument to Nariman Narimanov (1972), general Hazi Aslanov (1983, Lankaran), poet Samad Vurgun (Gazakh), scientist Yusif Mammadaliyev (Ordubad, Nakhchivan), busts of Gara Garayev, Fikrat Amirov, Bulbul, Niyazi, Jahangir Jahangirov and others. The author of the gravestone of Samad Vurgun in the Alley of Honors is also Jabbar Garyaghdi. His bas-relieves “Koroghlu of our time” dedicated to Israfil Mammadov, the first Azerbaijani awarded with the title Hero of the Soviet Union, “Farhad carving out the mountain of Bisutun” and “In old oil fields” and his work “The bust of heroic pilot Adil Guliyev” are the best samples of the plastic art of sculpture with deep expressiveness and dynamism. Jalal Garyaghdi passed away on January 1, 2001, in Baku.
