The Ilandagh- a majestic mountain in Nakhchivan and place of inspiration

Baku, April 13, AZERTAC
The Ilandagh, a 2,415m-high majestic mountain is considered as one of the main symbols of Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
Located in Nakchivan’s Julfa district, the Ilandagh has always remained a mysterious place, inspiring people to create myths and legends about the mountain.
Despite of its name, literally meaning a “Snake Mountain” in English, not a single snake have ever been spotted on the mountain.
The legend says that good people could hide in the mountain away from villains who were mercilessly attacked by snakes.
However, there is another popular and perhaps the main legend about Ilandagh.
The legend says that it was Noah who created Ilandagh’s cleft peak by crashing through the mountain during the Great Flood, dividing the peak into two parts. Noah then decided to rest on the Gamigaya Mountain in Ordubad, as he later founded the city of Nakhchivan.
