Azerbaijani exotic: feijoa

Baku, December 3, AZERTAC

The nature of Azerbaijan is generous with gifts. Of particular note are the fruits grown in the country. Delicate peaches, juicy citrus fruits, fragrant strawberries, unusual medlar and persimmons, and many others. However, there is such a fruit in Azerbaijan that as if incorporates the whole gamut of various tastes into an insanely bright cocktail. Of course, this is feijoa, which is grown in subtropical regions in the south of Azerbaijan. Green oblong berries of this evergreen plant appear on shelves throughout the country in late September and delight connoisseurs until mid-winter.
The taste of soft and juicy feijoa pulp at the same time resembles strawberries, citruses, pineapple, kiwi and other fruits. Moreover, each fruit has its own nuances of tastes, which are enhanced depending on the degree of its maturity. At the same time, feijoa has its own bright unique taste, which can be recognized with closed eyes. Feijoa can be eaten with a peel that gives the taste a little astringency. And you can peel the fruits to enjoy exceptionally delicate creamy pulp.
Feijoa is consumed in Azerbaijan not only in its raw form, but is also actively used in the preparation of jams, compotes or simply ground with sugar. In this form, feijoa is great for making sandwiches with butter or as a filling for pies.
Interestingly, the feijoa got its name in honor of the Portuguese naturalist Joan da Silva Feijo, who discovered this fruit in Brazil. This plant entered Azerbaijan at the beginning of the 20th century and quickly spread to regions with a subtropical climate.
In addition to excellent taste, feijoa has useful properties. The fruits of this plant are rich in organic acids and iodine. The content of the latter in feijoa fruits significantly exceeds the daily requirement for human iodine.
Be sure to try this delicious fruit while in Azerbaijan. Moreover, it is not expensive at all (0.7-0.9 dollars per kg). If you wish, you can take away feijoa, grated with sugar or compote from feijoa, which are produced on an industrial scale in Azerbaijan.
