First Azerbaijani nurse-Nigar Shikhlinskaya

The first Azerbaijani nurse Nigar Huseyn Afandi gizi Shikhlinskaya was born in 1878. Shikhlinskaya was the daughter of enlightener Huseyn Afandi Gayibov. Having graduated from the Transcaucasian Female College with a gold medal in 1889, she became the first Azerbaijani woman to obtain a higher education. She provided medical aid to those injured during World War I, chaired the Azerbaijan Red Crescent Society and was a founder of the Gold Crescent Society. Nigar Shikhlinskaya was a wife of Port-Arthur hero General Aliagha Shikhlinski.
