Dubai gets gigantic four-metre flying carpet
Baku, May 20, AZERTAC
Fairmont Dubai has decorated its lobby with a Middle Eastern theme to mark the start of Ramadan, and it includes a gigantic elevated carpet, according to timeoutdubai.com.
The feature will be on display until Friday June 15, accompanied by an art exhibition by contemporary crystal artist, Natalie Daghestani.
Making the elevated piece of art was no small feat, as it took the hotel’s engineering team two weeks to completely set it up.
The carpet weighs 70kg, and is held at 4.5 metres under the hotel's atrium, spanning four metres long and two metres wide. That’s a lot of weaving being done.
Crystallised portraits from the talented, British-born artist Natalie Daghestani will also be on display, with her past work consisting of thousands of Swarovski crystals in a mosaic-style.
She’s done portraits of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, international superstar Drake, and Marilyn Monroe.
The lobby is filled with crystal art pieces and 150 colourful Arabic lanterns – a perfect setting for Ramadan.
